Travel Advisory
To date, H5N1 outbreaks have not resulted in any travel warnings from the World Health Organization or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While there are no current restrictions on travel to or from areas affected by the Avian Flu, some countries have enacted procedures, such as temperature screenings, to monitor the health of travelers arriving from these areas.
Please be aware that traveling citizens and expatriates may have little assistance from their home governments. The United States Department of State has stated that its ability to assist Americans outside the US is likely to be very limited in the event of a pandemic. The State Department further expects that local and international travel limitations may be imposed for health reasons, including restrictions on travelers returning to the United States. Similar advice is being given by other nations. For example, the Australian Health Management Plan for Pandemic Influenza includes specific stages at which travelers will be advised to return home as well as border control information.

If you have travelers in areas affected by the Avian Flu, you may benefit from MEDEX’s Special Reports on Avian Flu. While the report for administrators focuses on company preparations for the Avian Flu, your travelers may find the information in the Special Report for Avian Flu for Individual Travelers helpful.
