MEDEX Corporate History

Founded in 1977, MEDEX Assistance Corporation initially focused on providing assistance services and claims administration as an attachment to travel health insurance policies. By 1981, MEDEX had expanded its market share throughout North America, gaining a reputation for premier services and efficiency in resolving cases. It was during this time that MEDEX also entered the insurance market in the United Kingdom. As the global economy expanded, so did the need for the quality assistance services for which MEDEX had become known.

By the late 1980’s, MEDEX entered the U.S. corporate market, selling travel assistance services to Fortune 500 companies. Developing additional benefits and services, MEDEX built upon its extensive global network of hospitals, clinics and physicians to meet new demands in a maturing travel assistance market. This was the foundation for the current MEDEX Network of Global Resources, which now spans more than 43,000 travel, medical and security providers outside of the United States.

Today, MEDEX continues the tradition of pairing unsurpassed international capabilities with quality travel assistance. Multilingual, 24/7 Emergency Response operations are centralized within the MEDEX Headquarters location in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. This assistance model maximizes quality, consistency and speed. From this single location, Assistance Coordinators and Nurse Case Managers handle 30,000 assistance cases and complex evacuations each year.

Over the past two calendar years, MEDEX has responded to member assistance calls originating in 211 distinct countries. The proprietary MEDEX network includes providers and assistance resources for all 239 of the international country codes (ISO 3166), so MEDEX can truly provide assistance anytime, anywhere.
