Having worked in the insurance industry for nearly 30 years, Bruce Kirby is well-prepared and eager to lead MEDEX to new heights. His dedication and motivation have won him the Maryland International Business Leadership Award, given to executives who exemplify entrepreneurial spirit, determination, creativity and cultural sensitivity. Since being named President and CEO of MEDEX in 2000, Mr. Kirby has seen to the continued growth and development of the company, all while maintaining the highest level of customer service possible.
As one of MEDEX’s longest tenured employees, Linda McGee has been influential in the success of the company. Starting at MEDEX in 1986 as a college intern, Ms. McGee officially joined the MEDEX team as a customer service representative in 1989. In her almost 20 years at MEDEX, Ms. McGee has been promoted to the level of President of MEDEX Insurance Services (MIS). She has been instrumental in the remarkable growth of the company, paving the way for MEDEX’s entrance into the corporate market and assisting in the creation of retail insurance services. Under her supervision, the MEDEX Sales Team has expanded the corporate customer base to cover a range of businesses, including small and mid-sized firms and Fortune 500 companies.
With more than 20 years of sales leadership experience in health services, consumer products and the travel assistance industry, Mike Roban makes an excellent new addition to the MEDEX Senior Leadership Team. Mr. Roban will be overseeing the expansion of our International and Domestic sales for corporate, scholastic, and USAID clients. He has a proven record in the assistance industry and has significant experience dealing with the Fortune 2500, scholastic institutions and government agencies. Mr. Roban has held key management positions at Health Management Corporation (Wellpoint Inc.), Matria Healthcare, and the Coca Cola Company.
As a former MEDEX client, David Mair brings a unique perspective to our client relations department. Prior to joining MEDEX, Mr. Mair spent 15 years at the United States Olympic Committee, where he developed the USOC risk management program into a nationally and internationally recognized program. He was president of the Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS), the largest association of professional risk managers worldwide, and served two terms as president of the Nonprofit Risk Management Center, providing education and support for over 20,000 nonprofit and public entities.
Josianne Pennington brings over twenty-five years of marketing and management experience to the MEDEX Global Group team. She joins MEDEX after serving eight years as the principal of Pennington & Associates, a strategic marketing consulting firm that worked in the financial, health and travel sectors. Before that, she ran a multi-million dollar division of an international publishing company. Ms. Pennington also served two years as President of the Board of the Susan G. Komen Foundation, Maryland Affiliate, and is a member of the Healthcare Businesswoman’s Association.
Mr. Varlotta’s leadership has helped pave the way for significant changes within MEDEX over the past few years. With more than 30 years’ experience in both finance and accounting, Mr. Varlotta has effectively managed MEDEX services to comply with budgetary requirements. In the past, his creativity and management skills were a valuable asset as he grew a construction business to an $8 million enterprise. His experience in providing consulting services to large organizations such as the Marriott Corporation has helped him clearly define the role of Chief Financial Officer at MEDEX.
With more than 10 years of IT experience, Eddie Jenkins offers MEDEX fresh ideas in information technology. For five years, he was with The Black & Decker Corporation, where he maintained and managed their multi-million dollar website as well as the website for DeWalt. Mr. Jenkins has extensive knowledge of business systems, IT standards and policies, and information security. He played a key role in globalizing the Black & Decker Information Technology Department by consolidating the European and North American IT departments. This ensured that all information technologies applications for the company occurred in one centralized location. Mr. Jenkins is dedicated to ensuring that MEDEX clients have access to the information they need to ensure their health and safety abroad.
William Irwin brings a formidable array of law enforcement, intelligence, military, and security expertise to his position as MEDEX’s Security Director. Spanning almost 40 years, Mr. Irwin’s career developing, implementing and evaluating international security and crisis management programs – honed in both the private sector and in government/military service – affords him a unique perspective on the increasingly volatile security situations facing companies and travelers today. It also provides him with the experience factors needed to not only respond to situations after they occur, but to anticipate potential problem areas and avoid or mitigate the risks they represent.
Dr. Walter B. Koppel is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and manages all MEDEX Physician Advisors, providing oversight on cases throughout the world. As he has for 30 years, he maintains a private practice in Internal Medicine. In addition to his responsibilities with MEDEX, Dr. Koppel is the medical director of Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory. In that capacity, he provides policy initiation, medical guidance, and oversees OSHA compliance and surveillance for major aerospace defense projects. Dr. Koppel earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Maryland Medical School, and holds a number of other degrees including a Masters of Public Health from the Medical College of Wisconsin; a Masters of Business Administration from Loyola College, and a Master of Science in Microbiology and Toxicology from the University of Maryland.
